Advent Kitchen Meditations

This week begins the season of Advent—the four week season of anticipation leading up to Christmas.
Contrary to popular culture, Advent is not an extended Christmas celebration—it is actually a somber season. As Fleming Rutledge says in her book Advent: The Once and Future Coming of Jesus Christ, it’s a time when we look the brokenness of the world squarely in the face knowing that Christ has come and Christ will come again.
We cannot rush ahead to Christmas, instead this season of Advent asks us to remember why it is that we ache for Christ’s coming in the first place.
Advent is about the slow journey, the waiting—about fostering hope, joy, love, and peace even in the face of grief and unmet longing.
Here are two different Advent podcast series you can listen to this Advent season. Each episode of Kitchen Meditations is designed to be listened to as you cook, helping you slow down and connect with God in the kitchen.
Edible Theology Advent Series
The first collection is an Edible Theology Advent series. It follows the four themes of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love, all focused on how these can be lived out in the kitchen and at the table.
Advent I: On Hope in Community
Advent II: On Peace Around the Table
Advent III: On Joy in Simple Things
Advent IV: On Love Through Labor
Edible Theology X We Welcome Advent Collaboration
The second collection is a series we developed in 2022 in collaboration with We Welcome, an organization that helps women of faith advocate for more just immigration policy. The podcast series works together in conjunction with our Advent guide, which you can download here. It's built out of lessons on hospitality learned from an Afghan refugee woman together in conversation with several characters in Scripture.
The guide includes recipes, kitchen tips, scripture readings and reflections, prayers, and gift recommendations.
