Meet God with your hands in dough.

Bake & Pray is more than an artisan bread-baking class. It's an invitation to reflect, to connect with God, and to build community through the simple, shared work of making bread.

In this six lesson online course, based on the live Bake & Pray™ workshop that Kendall teaches in churches across North America, you’ll explore the themes of rest, tension, curiosity, and joy through the art of breadmaking.

As you learn about the beauty of God woven into each bake, you’ll find that everyday life in the kitchen has more to offer than you imagined. Join thousands of others in finding meaning, rest, and joy in a batch of dough.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone interested in learning to bake bread as a spiritual practice. It's geared towards those who are new to baking and may be a bit intimidated by yeast.

The Bake & Pray™ method focuses on learning through repetition, allowing God to transform you as you transform your dough. It's a purposefully slow process. The goal is not just learning to bake bread, but finding rest, curiosity, and joy along the way.

This course is just the start of your Bake & Pray™ journey. It is meant to launch you into a lifetime of drawing closer to God through the craft of baking!

Course Lessons

What will I learn?

Mise en Place

Learn about the Bake & Pray™ method and get started making your first loaf.

Mixing

Learn about the transformation that takes place as you mix together flour and water, plus some helpful tips for regulating the temperature of your dough.

Stretching & Folding

This lesson focuses on building strength and tension in the dough, as well as the ways that God forms strength in us.

Shaping

In this lesson, you will learn how to shape a basic sandwich loaf, a free form boule, and a round braid. At the same time, you'll learn to notice the ways God is shaping and forming you.

Next Steps

This lesson walks you through the ways you can continue meeting God through the practice of baking—both on your own and in community. It also includes a video guide for how to use the Liturgy for Bread Baking.

  • How long will the course take me?

The workshop includes one hour of video material, but it is designed to be used over the course of 3-6 weeks. We encourage you to bake one to two loaves with each lesson.

  • What kind of bread will I bake?

We call this method "sourdough on training wheels". The flavor, texture, and technique are similar to sourdough, while using instant yeast instead of a wild yeast starter. It's perfect for anyone overwhelmed by the time or technique required for sourdough.

  • I'm gluten free. Is this course for me?

Yes! Since the release of the Bake & Pray book, King Arthur flour has developed a gluten free bread flour that can be used with this technique. The gluten free version of the recipe is included in the course.
