The word Eucharist means Thanksgiving. Every time we participate in Communion, we are participating in a ritual of Thanksgiving to God. But the Christian practice of Eucharist always begins with a prayer of confession. As we approach the American holiday of Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to follow suit—beginning with a prayer of confession so that we can most properly give thanks.
